Functional gastrointestinal disorders range from highly prevalent, but generally benign
conditions, eg, functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome, to rare and potentially life-
threatening diseases, eg, intestinal pseudo-obstruction syndromes. The term “intestinal
