Serum ferritin as a measure of iron stores in normal subjects

Serum ferritin has been measured by a two-site immunoradiometric assay employing
antibody-coated polystyrene tubes. Normal values were established by performing
measurements in male and female subjects between 20 and 50 years of age in whom iron-
deficient erythropoiesis was excluded on the basis of transferrin saturation and red cell
protoporphyrin. The serum ferritin was log-normally distributed with a geometric mean of 94
